Mandatory Carding Moves in Indiana

February 1, 2010

Making retailers card EVERYONE for ID? You bet. It’s moving in the Indiana General Assembly. I, for one, would be flattered at my age. Proposal applies to carry out items.

I’m part of the Asset Building Coaltion of Monroe County and the Program Dir. for the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incwentive Grant on Alcohol, so I felt the need to agree with you!

Mandatory carding is a common sense rule. It is much too difficult for young people (who mostly are the ones employed to read forms of indentification or to make a judgment on one’s appearance) to navigate whether someone appears 26 yrs. of age or not.
No to Sunday sales, but yes to carry out mandatory carding!
    Thanks!

Im 70 years old, there’s no way that anyone can mistake my wrinkles for a someone under age.
It’s just plain stupid to card someone that is my age, it’s a waste of my time time and the productivity of someone who is hired to give good service.
Lets hope the Indiana GeneralAssembly members have enough commonsence not to pass a law that will inconvenience older people .
It must be possible to write a law that deals with the problem of under age drinking while respecting the rights of people obviously not under age.

No you are right. But it also should not be sold in every gas station or grocery store where KIDS under the age of 21 is selling it. What to stop them from selling it to there friends that are not 21. NOTHING. More alcohol gets stolen off the shelves in those places than liquor stores. Come on Indiana open yours eyes. Alcohol is a controlled substance just like cigarettes. They are behind the counter for a reason, so minors can’t access them. We need to stop thinking about convenience for alcohol.

So, I am 59 and visiting Indiana from Singapore. Tonight, while shopping for a few groceries at Walmart I picked up a bottle of wine. The cashier asked me for an ID, so I gave her my SIngapore national ID card (picture, birthdate, and all). She said I needed a drivers licence, so I gave her my Singapore drivers licence (again with a picture and all details). She, and the on shift manager said that these were not acceptable, and I needed something issued in the US.

I am aware that Indiana is not in the running for a tourist friendly state, but, it may be in the running for a legislature without a brain.

    Regards,

Legislators are doing a survey now to figure out whether or not those 50 plus should be exempted from mandatory carding. We’ll see what happens. In the meantime, retailers report its keeping underage kids out of stores — probably a good thing despite your inconvenience.
